Hallo Bandoeng, hoort u mij?
Met die woorden van koningin-moeder Emma wordt op  28 februari 1928 de radiotelefoondienst tussen Nederland en Nederlands Indië ( nu Indonesië) geopend.
Vanaf dat moment  kun je vanuit Nederland naar Nederlands Indië bellen. Je moet er wel wat voor doen: naar een telegraafkantoor gaan in een van de vier grote steden waar een Indië-cel  is. Voor drie minuten betaal je 33 gulden – heel wat in die tijd!

De verbinding wordt gelegd vanuit Radio Kootwijk, bij Apeldoorn, naar zendstation Malabar op de hoogvlakte bij Bandung op Java.

Hello Bandoeng, do you hear me?
With these words Queen-mother Emma made the first wireless radio contact with the Dutch East Indies ( now: Indonesia) on February  28th, 1928.
Since that moment it is possible to make a telephone call from the Netherlands to the Dutch East Indies.  Although, it’s quite a job. You have to go to a telegraphoffice in one of the four big cities. And three minutes cost  33 guilders ( about 15 euros) – that’s a lot!

The connection is made from Radio Kootwijk, near Apeldoorn, to the station Malabar on the plateau  near Bandung on Java.

Radio Kootwijk, midden in een onontgonnen gebied: hei, bos, stuifzand. Ver weg van de bewoonde wereld. In de stilte. In de leegte. Geen storingen van buitenaf. Dan alleen is communicatie mogelijk.

Radio Kootwijk, in the middle of a large undeveloped area: heath, woods, drifting sand.  Miles away from  civilization. In silence, in emptiness, no interference from outside. Only then communication is possible.

Het gebouw is ontworpen door Julius Luthmann ( 1890-1973), in Art Deco stijl. Het is een mengvorm van de Amsterdamse en de Berlijnse school. Het is geheel gebouwd van  beton. IJzer en hout mochten niet gebruikt worden.
Luthmann laat zich inspireren door het beeld van de sfinx. Maar al gauw wordt het “de kathedraal van de Veluwe” genoemd. De decoraties zijn van Hendrik van der Eijnde ( 1869-1939)

The building is designed by Julius Luthmann (1890-1973), in Art Deco –style. It’s a mixture of the Amsterdam and Berlin School. It’s completely concrete. He wasn’t allowed to use wood and iron.  Luthmann was inspired by the image of a Sphinx. But soon it is popularly called “the cathedral”. The sculptures are made by Hendrik van der Eijnde(1869-1939).

In 1923 begint de PTT met transoceanische telegrafie, via de lange golf. Maar de grote doorbraak komt in 1928 wanneer een korte golf verbinding wordt aan gelegd.

Het gebouw is onverwoestbaar. De engelse bombardementen tijdens de tweede wereldoorlog richten nauwelijks schade aan.

In 1923 PTT begins with  transoceanic telegraphy, on the long wave. But the breakthrough is in 1928 with the short-wave transmission.

The building is indestructible. The English bombardments during WWII caused hardly any damage.

Met de komst van satellieten en digitale communicatiemogelijkheden wordt het complex in 2004 overbodig. Nieuwe bestemmingen worden gezocht. Er worden films opgenomen, er vinden culturele activiteiten plaats.

Satellites and digital communication possibilities made the complex redundant and it closed in 2004.
Since then it is used for cultural activities.

Maar vooral blijft het een plaats van stilte en van uitgestrekte natuur.
Met een gebouw dat je er aan herinnert dat juist voor communicatie stilte nodig is!

But most of all it remains a place of silence and nature.
With a building as a reminder that just communication needs silence!
