Wit-Rusland, officieel Belarus… voor mij jarenlang een heel onbekend land.
Ik herinner me dat ik zeven jaar geleden Natasha ontmoette. Ze was co-assistent in een  ziekenhuis en vertelde me dat ze afgestudeerd was als arts in haar eigen land.  Dat land was Wit-Rusland. Het was de eerste keer dat ik iemand uit Wit-Rusland ontmoette. Ze was aardig. Dus: Wit-Rusland maakte een goede indruk 🙂

Belarus.. for me it has been a very unknown country for years.
I remember I met Natasha seven years ago. She made her internship in a hospital and told me she was already a graduated doctor in her own country.  That country was Belarus. It was the first time I met someone from Belarus. She was nice.  So “Belarus” made a good impression 🙂

Vijf jaar geleden begon ik met Postcrossing. Ik kreeg kaarten uit Wit-Rusland en stuurde ze er ook heen. Er zijn daar meer dan 25.000 postcrossers. Dat is heel veel.
Op een dag kreeg ik een brief met een paar kaarten. Sveta, uit Minsk, had ze gestuurd. We bleven met elkaar schrijven. Ze vertelde me veel over haar land, de geschiedenis  en het leven daar. Soms was ik verbaasd. Waarom wist ik zo weinig over Wit-Rusland? Over wat er gebeurd is tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog, over de ontwikkelingen sinds de onafhankelijkheid in 1991? Over de geschiedenis? Een reden om te gaan lezen… Wit-Rusland kwam dichterbij, niet in het minst door al die postcrossers.

Five years ago I started Postcrossing.  I received postcards from Belarus. And I sent postcards to Belarus.  There are more than 25.000 postcrossers there. That’s a lot!
One day I received a letter with some cards. Sveta, living in Minsk, had sent it to me. We continued to write to each other. She told me a lot about her country, living there, the history. And sometimes I was astonished. Why did I know so little about Belarus?  About what happened there in WWII, about its development since its independence in 1991 ? About its history? A reason to read. Belarus came nearer. Postcrossing played an important role.

Bijna een jaar geleden nodigde Sveta me uit  om naar Wit-Rusland te komen.  Zij en haar zuster Volha wilden me hun land laten zien. Data werden afgesproken, visa aangevraagd, tickets geboekt.

Almost a year ago Sveta invited me to visit Belarus. She and her sister Volha wanted to show me their country.  Date got settled, tickets were bought and visa arranged.

En daar gingen we..  op 20 augustus met een rechtstreekse vlucht van Amsterdam naar Minsk, de hoofdstad. Maar 2 uur en 20 minuten, maar 1515 km (over de weg 1727 km), naar een onbekende wereld.

And there we went… on August 20th with a direct flight from Amsterdam to Minsk, the capital of Belarus. Only 2 hours and 20 minutes, only  1515 km (by road 1727 km), to an unknown world…

In mijn blog wil ik een impressie van onze reis naar Wit-Rusland geven.
Ik heb 6 posts gepland. Deze als een inleiding, twee over Minsk, een over hoe we daar woonden, aten en onderweg waren.  Ik zal ook een blog schrijven over Wit-Rusland tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog en één over het platteland en een Unesco monument, het kasteel van Nezvish.

In my blog I will show you an impression of our trip to Belarus.
I planned to write  6 posts. This one as an introduction,  two posts about Minsk, one about the way we stayed there, our house, food and transport. I will also write a post about Belarus during World War II, and one about the countryside and an UNESCO monument, Nezvish castle.

A few facts:
Belarus is a landlocked country in Eastern Europe. Neighbours are Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Ukraine and Russia.
Inhabitants: 9.498,4 million (on 1 January 2016) (cf the Netherlands  17.050.287 – today)
Total land area: 207,600 km² (cf The Netherlands: 41.543 km ²)
So Belarus has half the people, 5 times the land, compared to the Netherlands.40 % of the country is covered with woods.
The Netherlands is an important trading partner.
Currency: Belarusian ruble.
Part of the Soviet Union from 1919 till 1991.
Member of Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS)

Wit-Rusland is een door land ingesloten staat in Oost-Europa. Buren zijn Polen, Litouwen. Letland, Oekraïne en Rusland.
Inwoners: 9.498,4 miljoen (op 1 January 2016) (vgl Nederland  17.050.287 – vandaag)
Totale oppervlakte:  207,600 km² (vgl Nederland  : 41.543 km ²)
Vergeleken met Nederland heeft Wit-Rusland de helft van het inwoneraantal en 5 keer zoveel land).
40 % van het land is bedekt met bossen.
Nederland is een belangrijke handelspartner.
