We zijn in Kunming, de hoofdstad van Yunnan. Een stad met (nu) 6,6 miljoen inwoners, waarvan er 4,5 miljoen direct in de stad wonen.
We are in Kunming, the capital city of Yunnan.  Kunming has a population of 6,626,000 with an urban population of 4,575,000.

Kunming ligt op 1890 meter hoogte. Er is daarom weinig smog. Het heeft een van de mildste klimaten van China en wordt ook de Lentestad genoemd. Het hele jaar door bloeien er bomen en struiken.

Kunming is situated at an elevation of 1,890 metres (6,200 ft). It has one of the mildes climates of China. Kunming is known as the “City of Eternal Spring”. The city is covered with blossoms and lush vegetation all-year round.

Ook nu is het heerlijk weer en we zoeken een park op.
We zijn niet de enige! In dit park vinden we vooral ouderen. Ze zitten zomaar wat in de zon, slapen, spelen Mahjongg of Chinees schaak. Of ze maken muziek.
Een levendige bedoening!
Kun je nu zomaar gaan fotograferen? Ik vraag het hen. En ze zijn enthousiast. Een digitale camera zoals ik heb kennen ze nog niet (het is 2007 en het is een spiegelreflex) en ze vinden het leuk om de foto’s zelf te kunnen zien.
Ze bieden me thee aan en vragen of ik meedoe met Mahjongg spelen (wat ik toch maar niet doe). Het is echt gezellig.

The weather is indeed beautiful and we’re going into a park. We’re not the only ones! The park is filled with elderly people. Some are just sitting in sun or shadow, taking a nap. Others are playing, Mahjongg or Chinese chess. Or they are making music! Very lively.
Could I take pictures? I ask them. They are enthusiastic. Most of them have never seen a digital camera like I have (it is 2007 and it is a DSLR) and they love to see the pictures.
They offer me tea and ask if I would join them in playing Mah-jongg (I didn’t).
It is really “gezellig” (a Dutch word you can’t translate – it is something like cozy, sociable…)

De volgende dag ontdekken we andere parken. Het Daguan Park is gelegen rond een groot meer.  Ik ben in het hotel achtergebleven met wat koorts. De foto’s van het park zijn van Jan.

The next day we visit another park. The Daguan Park is situated around a large lake. I’ve stayed in the hotel because I had a bit fever. Jan took these photos.

De bloemenzee ziet er erg Nederlands uit. Maar: Kunming is een centrum van bloementeelt. HET centrum in Azië. Nederlandse deskundigen hebben technology naar Kunming gebracht. En natuurlijk is er veel samenwerking en zijn er Nederlandse bedrijven in Kunming gevestigd. Er is ook elk jaar een “Keukenhof”: Kunming International Flower Exhibition

The abundance of flowers looks very Dutch 🙂 But: Kunming is the center of floriculture. It is THE center in Asia. Dutch experts have brought the technology to Kunming. And of course there is a lot of cooperation and Dutch companies are settled in the region.
Every year a flower exhibition is held – like “Keukenhof”: Kunming International Flower Exhibition.

’s Avonds gaat ons vliegtuig naar Zhejiang. Door de nieuwjaarsdrukte hebben we geen tickets kunnen krijgen naar Wenzhou. We vliegen naar Hangzhou en zullen daar opgehaald worden. Maar eerst hebben we op het vliegveld nog een leuke ontmoeting. Een chinees junioren voetbal elftal. Met KNVB shirtjes aan. Jong Oranje loopt hier dus rond 🙂

In the night we will fly to Zhejiang. In these days before New Year many people are travelling. So we couldn’t get tickets to Wenzhou. We can fly to Hangzhou and there we will get picked up. But before that we have a nice encounter at the airport: a Chinese junior soccer team. With KNVB (Dutch football association) shirts! Young Orange is here 🙂

Volgende keer de reis naar Wenzhou. We zijn dan niet langer toerist maar gaan onder in  een “gewone” miljoenenstad en maken deel uit van een Chinese familie.

Next time our trip to Wenzhou. We will not be tourists anymore. We will immerse in a “normal” city with millions of inhabitants and we will be a part of a Chinese family.
