wat iemand betekende
wat er gebeurde
is er nu nog steeds of weer

meenemen naar de toekomst.

Universal Soldier

Monument voor de soldaten uit 22 landen die vochten in Korea.
Korean War Veterans’ Memorial : 22 countries participated in this war.

the universal soldier ( Donovan):
“His orders come from far away no more
They come from here and there
and you and me
and brothers can’t you see
this is not the way to put an end to war”. 

American Merchant Mariners' Memorial

In WO II verloren ook veel mensen op koopvaardijschepen hun leven door aanvallen van onderzeeboten. Eén van hen was Christiaan van den Assem, de oudste broer van mijn opa. Hij emigreerde in de 20-er jaren van de vorige eeuw naar de VS. Hij kwam in 1944 om in de Caraïbische Zee. Hij heeft geen graf. Dit monument is ook voor hem.

In WW II many merchant mariners lost their lives, due to an attack of an U-boat.
One of them was Christiaan van den Assem, my grandfather’s eldest brother. In the twenties of the past century he emigrated to the US. In 1944 he died in the Carribean Sea. He doesn’t have a grave. This memorial is for him as well.
